Dressing the Tempest
I have done set design before, and feel confident that I will be able to achieve some great set pieces for the movie. Costuming is not an area I have experience in really. I feel that good costumes will really help define the characters and the environments. Right now I have three environments that the characters will be inhabiting, and I want to keep a common thread (pun intended) across the environments while allowing the costumes to make the transitions obvious (especially when there are not enough sets pieces to do this).
I am currently working up some costume designs in my sketches. Here is a sketch of an aether pilot. I want the costumes in cyber space to be simple (and possibly include a screen rather than a human face). I’m thinking I want something that is almost animated looking.
For real world costumes I want to use certain colors to denote the different groups that are involved; however, I think the basic pieces will be rather ordinary (though I do like 80s futurism). The crew of the ship will need some pretty elaborate costumes for their cyber space gear. Here is a sketch I did of a crew member.
As far as costumes for the island, I still have no idea. I’m really drawn to what I might classify as “glitter fantasy” or “disco fantasy”. As examples I would bring up the movies Legend or Labyrinth. There will still be an “animated” quality like that of the cyber space costumes, but they need to stand out as different.
